What is Concrete Formwork?

Formwork is the term used for the process of creating a temporary mould into which concrete is poured and formed.  Traditional formwork is fabricated using timber, but it can also be constructed from steel, glass, fibre reinforced plastics and other materials.

Where is formwork used?

These are in the shape of hollow tubes, and are usually used for columns and piers.  The formwork stays in place after the concrete has cured and acts as axial and shear reinforcement, as well as serving to confine the concrete and prevent against environmental effects.

What is the purpose of concrete formwork?

To create building elements with concrete, it must be poured into a specially designed mold.  This is known as formwork or shuttering.  Formwork can use temporary or permanent molds, which hold the poured concrete in shape until it hardens and achieves enough strenght to support itself.
